How to focus to play sports

I am an avid pickleball player but sometimes I lose focus and concentration and then I start playing poorly. Any suggestions to help this problem?

Try reminding yourself to play one point at a time. You cannot change the score or what mistakes you may have made in the past, but you can contorl how you play in the next point.

I love this suggestion! Paying attention to breathing can slow our heart rates and give the brain more oxygen to think clearer. When all else fails, enjoy the game! Enjoyment brings us into the present.

I agree with @Frame_Rachel! It's important to stay in control of what you're feeling as best as possible. Maybe add a water break or a snack mid-way before you feel like you lose? The nervous system be affected either by stress or a spike in these mechanisms can contribute to loss of focus, decreased coordination, and reaction time. Other things that can contribute to feelings of this may be related to hydration or nutrition so I'll tag @Heather_C in here for tips! It's all connected, but that's a good things too 🙂

Such a great point, @Leada_M ! @denas , if you're starting to find it hard to concentrate and/or that your energy is waning, it could definitely be helpful to try increasing (or adding) something your pre-game snack, and/or bringing a hydration mix with electrolytes in addition to your water, to stay hydrated while you play!

Thanks for your suggestions. I will give them a try.

@Operadiva -  Love that you are playing Pickleball!!!  It's such a fun sport!!  One thing to try to focus on to keep you in the game, is try to think the "ball is coming to me".  Put this little phrase on replay and keep it running through your head.  Definitely make sure you are hydrated and energized, those are great tips, but the focus during your game is just as important.  Also try to talk to your partner, like calling the ball or strategizing.  These little chats keep you thinking about the game!  Good Luck!!
